GUIDED TOUR TO XÀTIVA

A comprehensive walking tour through a city of Iberian origin declared a historic and artistic ensemble.

Xàtiva, the birthplace of El Españoleto and two popes of the Borja dynasty: Alexander VI and Callixtus III

A city that was the head of the diocese during the Visigothic domination, although its moment of most extraordinary splendor was with the arrival of the Muslims to the Peninsula.

After the Reconquest, it became one of the most important cities within the Valencian royal territory. During the war that Spain suffered after the death of Carlos II, the city became a bastion. After the victory of the Bourbons and with Philip V on the Spanish throne, he ordered to burn the city down as punishment for the support offered to the opposing side, a fact that the locals… do not forget.

In this context, this guided tour of Xàtiva is presented. It is a city of great historical relevance that the client will be able to discover from beginning to end.

On one side, we find the Castell Menor, the oldest part of the fortress, and on the other, the Castell Major, which is later larger and better preserved.

  • The Castell Menor is the oldest sector of the entire complex. It preserves Iberian and Roman remains. It was erected on Penya Roja, on rugged terrain, which results in a beautiful landscape. We find constructions such as the Puerta de Aníbal, the Walls, the Square Tower, and the Second Gate inside.
  • At the highest point of the Castell Menor, on a hill, is the Balcony of Himilce. It stands out for the Queen’s Tower, which refers to the maiden who married the Carthaginian general Hannibal for convenience, as this united the Iberian people and the Carthaginians. Only the archway remains from this time, offering a fantastic Castell Major view.
  • At the summit of the Sierra de Vernissa stands the Castell Major. It was built in the feudal era, and it is the most translucent space that has best withstood the test of time. It has views to the west and monumental walls for its defense. Jaume I, the Conqueror, used it as an essential enclave on the route between the kingdom of Castile and Valencia.

The visit to Xàtiva Castle, especially the interior of the Castell Major, allows us to remember how they lived at that time. Elements such as cisterns, control towers, and dungeons saw renowned characters serving sentences.

The guided tour of Xàtiva does not end here.

The collegiate church

This large Christian temple is nicknamed La Seu among its neighbors and acquaintances, as Xàtiva tried to transform the city into an episcopal see.

Construction began at the end of the 16th century on the site of the city’s Muslim mosque. It continued for four hundred years and is still unfinished today.

The Royal Hospital

With Philip V’s arrival in Valencia, the city of Xàtiva suffered a serious fire, which damaged the hospital. Thus, in the first half of the 18th century, it was rebuilt with tiles added from the Royal Factory of Valencia.

… And more, it is a complete experience: the group will also visit the Church of Sant Feliu, the Church of Sant Domènec, the Church of San Francisco, and the Plaza de la Trinidad, among other monuments and places that make Xàtiva, the city it is.

And as a final point, local gastronomy

To end our guided tour in Xàtiva, we will have the opportunity to taste traditional dishes from the area, such as baked rice, and desserts of Arabic origin, such as arnadí or almoixàvena.

All accompanied by the best wines with Designation of Origin from the Moixent, Fontanars dels Alforins, and La Font de la Figuera areas.
