Sagunto has its origin as the Iberian city of Arse in the 5th century BC. After the Second Punic War and during the Roman Empire, Saguntum experiences a period of splendor.

Then, tremendous civil works were carried out, such as a great circus and a theater with a capacity for eight thousand people. In Islamic times, the city changed its name to Murviter, which, after the Christian conquest by Jaume I, became Murviedro. It was already in the 19th century that its Roman denomination when Sagunto was restored.

The Castle of Sagunto, or Alcazaba, is an immense and tangled defensive system more than a kilometer in length that clings to the hill that dominates the city.

The Roman theater is an emblem of the city. It is peculiar in that it was excavated in the rock of the slope that joins the castle hill with the plain. In 1896, it was declared a National Monument.

The Jewish Quarter will take us through narrow streets full of the charm of its medieval past.

We will learn about the remains of the temple of Diana. It is a Roman wall from the 5th century BC that belonged to the aforementioned temple. It is the only one that survived the great siege and destruction of Saguntum at the hands of the Carthaginian general Hannibal, one of the great military strategists in history. It was declared a National Monument.

We will also visit other points of interest in Sagunto, such as the Church of Santa María, which dates from the 14th century, or the Church of El Salvador, which dates from the 13th century, both in Valencian Gothic style.

The underground river of the Grutas de San José, in the nearby town of Vall d´Uixò, is a natural cave of incomparable beauty.

Located next to the Natural Park of the Sierra de Espadán, it is the longest navigable underground river in Europe with a length of almost 3 kilometers, of which about 800 meters are visitable.

The caves of San José contain limestone formations from the Triassic period, about 230 million years ago. In addition, they inhabited caves in the Paleolithic about 17,000 years ago, as evidenced by the archaeological remains found in them.

The visit ventures into the depths of the earth, sailing on calm waters that have been shaping the rocks for millions of years, resulting in whimsical forms.
